Criminal cases

Criminal cases with decades of experience

Our law office assists crime victims (complainants), suspects and defendants in criminal matters from the beginning of the preliminary investigation to the end of the criminal proceedings, including potential trials. We regularly handle criminal cases in the Helsinki metropolitan area (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and surrounding areas) and elsewhere in Finland if necessary.

In particular, it is advisable for the suspect, but also for the victim, to contact a legal adviser as early as possible, so that the legal adviser has time to carefully examine the case and the client’s rights can be exercised in the best possible way. The legal adviser is involved in the preliminary investigation and interrogations and assists the client in the proceedings in various instances. If the client is a victim of crime, the legal adviser also handles the victim’s claims for compensation.

Especially in serious criminal cases, it is important that a suspect has a lawyer with him/her right from the preliminary investigation stage. If you are considering the need for a lawyer at the preliminary investigation stage, please contact us and let’s review your situation together.

Remember that, if necessary, you can apply to the state for legal aid, in which case you will be able to use a legal adviser either free of charge or against a deductible, depending on your situation. We can find out about your right to free legal aid, assist you in applying for legal aid or, if necessary, draft the application on your behalf.

Also remember the legal expenses insurance, which is usually included in home insurance, to cover legal costs. In many cases, legal expenses insurance covers a large proportion of the costs incurred. When necessary, we will find out on behalf of our client whether legal expenses insurance covers legal expenses and will make the necessary declarations and applications to the insurance company.

Sexual offences

Sexual offences are different from other criminal cases because of their sensitive nature and require special tact and confidentiality on the part of the lawyer. We have been dealing with sexual offences for many years and handle them with the sensitivity and experience required.

The preliminary investigation of a sexual offence usually starts with the lodging of a report of an offence. In the case of sexual offences, it is a good idea to contact a legal adviser at the earliest possible stage, especially the victim (the injured party) should be in contact with the legal adviser already at the time of filing the report of an offence.

The police will carry out preliminary investigation measures in the case. Once the preliminary investigation is completed, the case is forwarded to the prosecutor for consideration of charges, at which point the prosecutor decides (based on the preliminary investigation) whether to prosecute the case.

Both the complainant and the person accused often need the help of a lawyer during the preliminary investigation phase as well as during the trial of a criminal case. The police will carry out the necessary preliminary investigations. This means gathering evidence to establish the suspicion of a crime, for example by interviewing people involved and possible witnesses and obtaining possible laboratory reports.

From the victim’s point of view, a legal adviser is an essential part of ensuring that the facts relevant to the preliminary investigation are clarified and that the victim’s rights are thereby respected at trial.

For an accused person, a legal adviser is important because the adviser monitors the rights of the accused from the preliminary investigation onwards and can have a significant influence on whether all the necessary evidence against a possible accusation is presented, which can ultimately have an impact on whether a case is prosecuted.

The court proceedings in matters related to sexual offences involve special features compared to the normal criminal procedure, such as the confidentiality of the identity of the complainant and the holding of the trial in-camera. To ensure that these measures are also taken, it is advisable to contact your lawyer at an early stage.

It is worth noting that the costs of using a legal adviser in a sexual offence case are covered either by legal expenses insurance or by state funds. The state pays the legal aid fee for victims / complainants of sexual offences and domestic violence.

A restraining order may be imposed to prevent an offence against life, health, liberty or privacy or a threat of such an offence or some other kind of severe harassment. We also handle restraining order cases. We prepare applications for restraining orders and assist in the court proceedings for restraining orders.

Only some types of offences have been mentioned above. You can contact us for all criminal matters.

Do not hesitate to contact us as early as possible. This will ensure the best possible outcome for you.
